Game of Thrones, season 7 episode 5, “Eastwatch” review: Bombshells and Surprise reunions.

After the last week’s stupendous episode of full dragon apocalypse, this episode was full of bombshells, surprise reunions and revelations, Jaime is alive! This episode carries a lot of unexpected and surprising events, returning of some old characters and formation of one badass team of seven psychopaths.

In the last week’s vanquishing of Lannister army, Jaime and Boron survived. Jaime rushed to the Westeros and told Cersei about the war against the gigantic Dragon and unorthodox Dothraki army. He also informed about the scorpion (spear shooter) being ineffective against the dragon. They also lost one of their most loyal ally, Randyll Tarly and his son Dickon as they were executed by the dragon fire, rest of their banner men “Bend their knees” for the one true queen. This makes Tyrion and Varys uncomfortable such that they thought of the mad king’s inheritance in his daughter.

Meanwhile in Dragonstone, the alleged chemistry between Jon and Danny has yet to disclose onscreen but, the small meeting of Drogon (eldest dragon of Danny) and Jon induce some sensations in both Danny and her Dragons, but someone spoil the party. Yes Jorah is back to serve his queen. Danny shared a platonic hug which earned a jealous glare from Jon. But he doesn’t know that, Ser Jorah has been doomed to wander the friendzone for all eternity.

On the other part of seven kingdoms, in Winterfell, Bran is playing with his unnatural powers and saw a vision of army of the dead marching towards South. He send ravens to Archmaester Ebrose and aware him about the army of dead. In meantime, Sam was serving to the Archmaester and listen about the script about the dead army from the Winterfell. He claims about the unnatural powers of Brandon Stark and said he is the only person who survived beyond the wall. But despite Sam’s entreaties, the maesters prefers to prevaricate. This makes Sam frustrated; he walks out enraged and as the review title described: Surprising and full of Bombshells, Gilly was at the edge to open the undisclosed secret of Rhaegar Targaryen’s secret marriage to Lyanna Stark (mother of Jon Snow), but Sam completely ignored her and decide to leave the Oldtown.

In the Dragonstone, Jon also receives a raven from the Winterfell, which addressed him about home coming of Arya and the dead marching towards south. This threatens the small council of the Danny, but here comes the hand of the queen with the cunning plan after another coming unstuck, suggested to kidnap a white walker and present it to Cersei as a proof of the threat marching towards south. To fill up this into Cersei’s ear, Tyrion smuggled to Westeros by Ser Davos, where he has a sneaky meet up with his exiled brother Jaime, where he gets told all about the night king and the army of dead. What a plan!  Cersei already knows about the meeting with little dwarf, she drops the bigger bombshell! She is pregnant with Jaime’s child. She also ends the scene with whispering “Never betray me again”.

While all this is going on, Ser Davos makes his way to recruit the help of wild card Gendry, King Robert Baratheon’s surviving heir straight from the season three. Ser Davos tracked down him in Fleabottom, where he was grouchily tending his blacksmith’s forge. Ser Davos offering him to fight with king in the north Jon Snow and he undoubtedly agreed, acquiring his impressive war hammer soon to take part in the kidnapping of walker with Jon Snow. Their banter-filled introduction weaves worryingly close to the Game of Thrones fan-fiction.
Somewhere in the Winterfell, Arya reckons her ninja training, starts following Littlefinger around, but she is unaware of Littlefinger leading her directly where he wants her to find-the letter Sansa sent to Rob all the way back in season one. Sansa was forced into writing this letter. Arya with her outstanding ninja skills managed to get that letter as Baelish wants to let her know. Apparently Littlefinger have successfully grown the seeds of suspiciousness in between the Stark sisters, troubling times ahead for house Stark. The last few weeks he was on the back foot but Littlefinger spinning himself out of trouble again.

At the Eastwatch, we see the assembling of fan-favourite characters as Jon, Jorah, Hound, Tormund, Gendry, Thoros and Beric Dondarrion all set out to go and catch a walker from the north of the wall to take back and show everyone in south. When all these men gathered, it seems like they are not convinced to go together although they are heading in same direction, but Jon convinced them very smartly and created a so called suicide squad of fan –favourite characters. It will be very enthralling to watch the next episode, how king in the north captures a white walker. The preview for the forthcoming episode looks to be one action-packed thriller.

So what do we think about this episode?

As the last episode was full of fire massacre and slaughter-fest, this episode was low on action but was flying high in revelations department.  Cersei’s pregnancy was really surprising; it’s like filling the fuel in the fire, as both Jaime and Cersei didn’t take defeat terribly well and makes Jaime by her side as he was starting to question his sister’s decisions. Besides that, we cannot ignore Gilli’s reading about Rhaegar’s secret marriage with Lyanna Stark which was completely snubbed by Sam, but it was a huge disclosure as now we know that Jon is not a bastard of Rhaegar’s, but a true Targaryen.
In this season, the evil-politics was completely missing, but from this episode we see the moriarty-esque level of Littlefinger back on track, as he grows mistrust between Stark Sisters. It was also good to see Gendry back after 34 episodes, Jon Snow in the Eastwatch assembling fan-favourite characters for an epic battle and an endearing moment between Jon and Drogon.

Final Verdict: this episode gave us the feeling of classic Game of thrones fiction, bombshells, and surprising reunions and finally we see white walkers in the story line in this season and their existence, although it is also very disheartening that only two episodes are left in this season.

It will be interesting to see how the band of seven unusual characters fight the whole army of the dead and whether they make it out of the fight alive or  Beric has to call the lord of light for some help.
