Game of Thrones season 7 episode 3 ‘The Queen’s Justice’ review: Fire meets Ice!

Sunday night’s or Monday morning’s (if you live in India) episode of Game of Thrones was a sight for the much awaited meeting of the Mother of Dragons and the King in the North. It was truly a remarkable moment in the show’s history as we’ve been seeing these characters for the past six years in different places, developing their story arcs, & for them to finally meet up is truly a big deal.

So the episode started with Jon arriving with Ser Davos at Dragonstone. They were greeted by the council of Daenerys Targaryen as he is re-united with Tyrion Lannister. And after a humorous scene where Missandei rattles off Dany's many titles, to which Ser Davos responds with Jon's introduction: " And this is Jon Snow" adding after a meaningful look from Jon, "King in the North", Jon forewarned Dany about the inevitable attack of the army of the dead which they all were hesitant to believe. Jon told Tyrion about the dragonglass which is required against the white walkers which also happens to be in abundant quantity in Dragonstone. Dany allows Jon to dug up the dragonglass only after the advise of Tyrion which also included a really funny banter between them.

In King’s Landing, Euron returned after capturing both Yara and Ellaria Sand (with her daughter) and presented the sandsnakes as a gift to Cersei Lannister. The episode was aptly titled ‘The Queen’s Justice’ as Cersei finally got her justice after poisoning the daughter of Ellaria in the same manner as she did to Myrcella.

Then we were taken to Winterfell where Sansa has taken the role of a leader efficiently. She's also getting a bit of handy advice from Petyr Baelish when they are interrupted by people who summon Sansa to the gate. We get a sweet Stark reunion as Bran has finally arrived to his home with Meera. Bran told Sansa about him being the three-eyed raven, concept with which Sansa is not familiar.

Before returning to Dragonstone, we also saw Ser Jorah fully healed from the infection by the efforts of Sam Tarly whose reward was not getting expelled from the citadel after attempting a banned procedure of treating the greyscale.

Then we bring our attention to Casterly Rock, where Greyworm and his men (the unsullied) took out the Lannister soldiers and captures Casterly Rock. But their victory is short-lived as they realises a large portion of Lannister army was not there as we see Euron and his ships destroying the unsullied army at the Rock and the remaining Lannister army headed by Jamie marching towards the Highgarden.

After an off-screen battle, the Highgarden is conquered and Lady Ollena Tyrell sits in her room waiting for her impending demise. After a brief back-and-forth with Jamie, she drinks the poisonous wine offered by Jamie and told him about her hand in the poisoning and death of his son Joffrey.

So what do we think about this episode?

The episode was sublime throughout. The acting, the visuals, chemistry between the characters was all outstanding, but the unsung hero of the episode in our opinion is the dialogues. The writers deserve a rightful credit as this episode was filled with clever and strong dialogues with a hint of humour. The monologue by Daenerys about her sufferings and pain was superlative as was the tirade of Cersei before punishing the sandsnakes.

The episode was successful in further demonstrating that Cersei is two steps ahead of her enemies. As seen in the last episode, she again outsmarted the Khaleesi and she also has the new weapon developed by Qyburn for taking out the dragons, & thus the battle between the ladies for the iron throne is taking an interesting shape.

There was no sight of Arya or the Mountain or the white walkers in this episode but there are still four episodes left in this season and they all will play a crucial role in the coming episodes.

Final Verdict: This episode was a treat for the viewers as paths of many characters have started to tangle. We got re-unions, inevitable first time encounters, characters facing the consequences for their actions and demise of a fan-favorite.

There are just a few episodes left in this season and the upcoming eighth season but if we are getting this quality of episodes, then there is nothing to complain about.
